Should Abortion be Legal?

This is my persuasive essay that I had to write for school. I hope you enjoy it and that it makes you truly think about this tragic topic.

It is not a simple question or even an easy one at that. Many people, even Christians, struggle with what to believe. Mostly, your final decision on this matter, as well as many others of importance, are usually greatly influenced by your core values. If you are a Christian you probably will agree with my point of view on this matter. My answer is no. If you believe that we are all made in the image of God how could we not agree?

To start I need to make sure we all fully understand what abortion is from an unbiased point of view. After all, what happens during abortion? How does it work? I’ll be brief. There are several steps that you have to go through beforehand, consulting with your doctor, getting medication, etc. For the actual procedure, they dilate your cervix with medal rods, insert a flexible tube into your uterus, and use suction to remove all of the pregnancy “tissue.”

They do this process when you first realize you are pregnant all the way up until you are 14 weeks along. Some places even do it a little after that 14 week deadline. Did you know that at 14 weeks your baby can now squint, frown, grimace, and pee! He or she can grasp too. Your baby measures 3 1/2 inches long and weighs 1 1/2 ounces. By 8 weeks some studies show that your child can even feel pain. Do some research on it. Discover how developed your little baby is because what I have just told you is only a little.

Many, though not all, who support abortion believe in evolution. They believe that this little miracle from God is just an unfeeling, nonliving tissue. Just a random unimportant clump of cells. If you believe that you’re not killing a creation of God. You are just getting rid of a problem. An accident. Something of no value.

People drone on and on about women’s rights. How It’s the woman’s decision. That whatever is best for her should be done. When I advocate against abortion, believe me, I am thinking about whats best for that woman. Most women who get an abortion severely regret it. They suffer with depression and have to live with the pain of their decision for the rest of their lives. Who knows, you may be one of the few women that say that they don’t feel that way. That they are perfectly okay, but what if you aren’t? What if you’re the majority, not the minority? Are you prepared to live with that?

Second, I would like to call to attention responsibility. If you are able to get pregnant then you probably know the process of how it happens. If you can’t handle what would happen if you got pregnant then don’t have sex!

You may be asking what about if a women gets raped or the pregnancy could put the mother’s life in danger. The only thing I have left to say then is when you become pregnant it’s not just “your” body anymore. It is that precious child’s home now. It can’t decide to go somewhere else to live. You virtually hold it’s life in your hands! Besides, what about that child’s rights? Do they not matter now just because it’s life impedes upon your own?

Life begins at conception, no matter how it happens. Regardless of what you believe of the origins of life, that baby didn’t chose for himself/ herself to come into the world unwanted. We are¬†all fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of the everlasting God. That includes unborn babies too. When you become pregnant you become a mother. Once your child is born however, if you feel unfit to raise him or her, there are options far¬†better than abortion you can explore.

Whether you are a parent to be or just someone curious about this subject I strongly urge you to do your own in depth research. Hear each side and then carefully decide where you stand.

  1. I don’t agree with abortion unless in extenuating circumstances such as rape, and not only because I’m a Christian. My thoughts are these: We measure death, the absence of life, by both heartbeat and brain activity. We should be using these same standards to measure life. If a fetus has both a heart and brain activity, it is therefore alive and now has rights as a living thing.
